Im winter semester 2014/15 I took part in the course "Typografie 3" by Elisabeth Schwartz. In this course, the main focus lay on expermental book design. The result should be a compendium of typography. Our task was it to choose a font, a topic and additionally, we had the challenge to work with only one colour. As well, we should get familiar with typesetting, create rooms, choose a pagination and else. The book should contain 7 different chapters, each chapter dealing with a certain topic. The topics for our experiments were: space, content, image, hirarchy, plains, sense and dictionary.
The topic I choose for my book was "puns". The title arose from my choice for the pagination, which, on the one hand parallels the page numbers, on the other hand it pallallels two words as well which, read together, form a new word.
For the chapter pages I searched for different puns, which fit in with the chapter topics. For that, I designed some puns myself, which contained the titel word and which I, therefore, could use as chapter pages.
The book has 323 pages. The paper is cream-coloured, which fits in with the pun-topic, as a lof of punbooks are also printed on a similar kind of paper. The chosen type is named Chaparral Pro. It combines the readability of serif types with the grace of Antiqua-book types. Furthermore, it is a multifaceted, hybrid serif type. The changeable letter proportions, available in all styles, provides it with its asthetic looks.
The Cover, as well as the endpaper, are constructed as as a crossword puzzle, so that the topic "puns" is grabbed by that as well.
